Why I check who viewed my story

It's late, you posted something an hour ago, and your thumb goes back to the little eye on its own.

The list scrolls and you don't really read the names. You're looking for that one. If it's there, your chest warms up, not for long. If it isn't, you tell yourself it means nothing, and ten minutes later you open the list again anyway. That gesture gets to me a little, it's so quiet.

What you posted maybe wasn't for everyone. Maybe it was a way of saying "I'm here, look" to one person, without having to ask.

So the list turns into an answer, and every missing name into a sentence you read in their place. It costs an evening of counting views, and something you were offering becomes a question asked into the dark.

You're not looking for views, you're looking for a name.

I was wondering…

What makes it feel safer to be seen than to tell them you were thinking of them?
