Why do I always end up in the friend zone
It's midnight and someone you like texts to tell you about their day. You answer right away, and you tell yourself: later, I'll tell them.
You're the one who answers right away. You remember the appointment on Tuesday, you ask how it went, you find the words when someone doesn't call back. And what you want yourself, you keep for later, for when the moment is right. That patience, honestly, gets to me.
Underneath there's often a quiet idea: if I'm there enough, useful enough, they'll end up seeing me differently. So you become the person they count on, before you've said you were hoping for more. The other person gets used to that spot, because it's gentle and costs them nothing. And you wait for a sign nobody knew you were watching for.
The other person gets used to a spot that costs them nothing.
I was wondering…
What would you have to risk, if being useful to them stopped being how you stayed close?
