Why I panic when someone says “can we talk”

The message lands, four words, no exclamation mark: “Can we talk?” Your stomach has already dropped a floor.

You don't answer right away. You reread it, hunting for the tone, scrolling back through the last few weeks to find what you did. Within ten seconds you've written the whole conversation, and in every version you're the one at fault. It tugs at me a little, because nobody has said anything yet.

Maybe a sentence that short has always sounded, for you, like a reproach on its way. Your body answers the argument you imagined, not the person writing, who may only want to tell you something. Until the reply comes, you spend the hour defending yourself against someone who hasn't attacked. Does that sound like you?

You're defending yourself against an argument nobody has started.

I was wondering…

How much would you have to get wrong, before someone stopped wanting you around?
