Why I keep counting how many hours of sleep I have left
It's 1:40. You check the clock and do the math: if I fall asleep right now, that's five hours.
Five hours is still okay. You look again: 2:05, four and a half. Every glance brings the number down, and your chest tightens a little more. Tomorrow is already ruined in your head, the meeting, the heavy voice, the whole day to get through.
It tugs at me, picturing you there in the dark, your phone lighting up the ceiling.
That math feels like a way to stay in control. If you know exactly what's left, nothing can catch you off guard. But sleep won't be counted, and each number becomes one more small alarm. What keeps your eyes open isn't the night anymore, it's the count. And tomorrow's tiredness, you're already paying for it tonight, in advance.
What keeps your eyes open isn't the night anymore, it's the count.
I was wondering…
How tired are you allowed to be, before you stop being someone people can count on?
