Why I feel guilty the moment I rest
You've just sat down on the couch, and a small voice is already telling you that you could start a load of laundry.
Nothing urgent, nobody waiting on you. And it starts anyway: the washing machine, the email you never answered, the box in the hallway. You stay there, but only your body is sitting. Your head is still standing up.
Ten minutes in, you get up "just to" do one thing. Or you stay, and you count the time going by. It tugs at me a little, that couch where you can't settle.
It's as if sitting down had to be earned, and the right only came once everything was done. Except the list never ends, so that moment never comes. What it costs you is the rest itself: a rest where you keep watch on yourself doesn't rest you, and you get up as tired as you sat down.
A rest where you keep watch on yourself doesn't rest you.
I was wondering…
What would it mean about you, if you stayed on that couch and let the whole list wait?
