Why I repeat the same mistakes when I can see them coming
You feel the sentence rising, the yes, the message. You tell yourself "not this time," and your hand does it anyway.
The strangest part is that you know. You see it coming, like one more step on the stairs. There's even a second where you think "I could do this differently." Then your hand does what it always does, and afterwards you wonder how you could. That part gets to me: you blame yourself twice, for the mistake, and for having seen it coming.
It's a pattern, and it has nothing to do with weak willpower. That move helped you once. It avoided a fight, kept someone close, calmed a room. It stayed because it's quicker than your decision.
What it costs is your trust in yourself: bit by bit, you start to believe you can't change, when really you have an old reflex that gets there before you do. Is that how it is for you?
You blame yourself twice: for the mistake, and for having seen it coming.
I was wondering…
What would you let yourself be, on a day you weren't keeping score of everything you get wrong?
