Why I write messages I never send

It's late, you're typing a long message, and your thumb hangs over the button. Then you delete it all, or you leave it in your drafts.

You finally write the real sentence, the one you didn't say to their face. "It hurt me, what you said on Sunday." It comes out all at once, before you have time to smooth it. And right before sending, you already hear the answer: the silence, or the "you're overreacting", or the "let's talk later". So your thumb deletes it, letter by letter. Or the message sleeps with the others. It tugs at me a little, all those sentences written to the end for nobody.

That message is what you really think, and writing it brings a minute of relief. But on the other side, the person goes on with their evening knowing nothing. And you're the one carrying alone what the two of you were meant to carry together, tucked in your phone, one thumb away.

The real sentence already exists, asleep in your drafts.

I was wondering…

Who would you be to them, if they knew how much that actually hurt you?
