Why I know someone's mood the second they walk in
A key in the lock, a bag set down a little too hard, and you already know. Your body has tuned itself before the "hey."
You listen to the door before you listen to the person. The sound of the key, the steps in the hallway, the quiet before hello. In three seconds you know whether the evening will be gentle or whether it's better not to ask anything.
So you adjust without thinking: you lower your voice, you put away what you wanted to tell, you keep a joke warm just in case. Nobody sees that kind of attention, and it moves me.
Underneath, there's a very simple idea: if you see the storm coming, it soaks you less. So you watch, even on the nights when the other person just had a long day and it has nothing to do with you. It costs this: your evening has already begun before theirs, and you're carrying a mood that isn't yours.
Your evening has already started before theirs.
I was wondering…
What would your evening be, if nobody's mood tonight was yours to carry?
