Why I rewatch a show I already know by heart

11:40pm. You have twelve things waiting in your list, and you put on the episode you could recite.

You are not really watching. You are letting it run. You know the line before it lands, you can go brush your teeth and miss nothing. And it works, honestly: your shoulders come down an inch.

All day you had to guess. The tone of a message. What that silence meant after you spoke. Whether the thing said at lunch was a joke. Here, no guessing.

That is what you are switching on: a place where you already know how it ends. The one part of the day with nothing to anticipate. The cost is small and it comes back every night: the episode runs, the hour goes, and you go to bed without having had your evening.

A place where you already know how it ends.

I was wondering…

Where else in your life does nobody need you to guess what they really mean?
