Why I compare myself to other people before sleep

It's late, the light from the screen is on the ceiling. You told yourself "one last photo," and now you're looking at the new kitchen of someone you barely know.

You stop on the wedding, the promotion, the baby laughing, the hike at sunrise. And something tightens, quietly, in your chest. You start adding up without meaning to: their apartment, your rent, their couple, your evening on the couch.

It stings, and I don't find that silly at all.

What you're looking at is one picture, picked by them, on a sunny day. What you set beside it is you at 11pm, with your whole day inside: the emails, the dishes, the doubt at four in the afternoon. Those two can't be measured against each other.

What it costs is that you fall asleep feeling late for a race nobody ever announced. And the small good things in your day never even make it into the count.

You put their best photo next to your whole day.

I was wondering…

What would you still be proud of today, if there were nobody else to measure it against?
