Why I let the phone ring when someone calls
The phone buzzes on the table. You see the name, you let it ring all the way out, and you text straight after: "sorry, couldn't pick up, everything okay?"
It isn't that you don't want to talk to them. It's that a call starts without warning. A message, you read when you want, you choose your words, you can delete. On the phone you answer right away, with the voice you happen to have that minute, and that one can't be reread. So you let it ring, and you take the wheel back in writing. Thirty seconds later, so nobody has time to worry: that part gets me.
What you're avoiding isn't the person. It's being heard unprepared. And it works, every time. Except that little by little, the people who love you text instead of calling, because they've understood. You keep control of your sentences, and you lose the calls that were going nowhere, the ten minutes about nothing, the laugh in the middle of a word.
You keep control of your sentences, and you lose the calls that were going nowhere.
I was wondering…
Who still gets to hear you before you've had time to work out what to say?
