Why I reread our old messages
It is past midnight, you are in bed, and your thumb is scrolling the thread upward. You already know where you will stop.
You do not reread all of it. You go back to one exact place, the part where messages came fast, with photos of nothing and typos nobody bothered to fix. You know how it goes and you read it anyway. There is something tender in that, and something exhausting too. Because while you read, you are comparing: the tone then, the tone now, the day the sentences got shorter.
What you are after is not the memory. It is an answer. Was it real, did I make it up, was I the one who tipped something over. Rereading feels like investigating, so it feels like moving. But a thread of messages will never tell you what was in someone else's head. And while you spend midnight inside a conversation from two years ago, the day you just lived through is the one nobody is rereading.
Rereading feels like investigating, so it feels like moving.
I was wondering…
What are you still hoping to find in there, that would finally let you off the hook?
