Why I sound like my parents
You're standing in the hallway, you say something to someone, and it's your mother's voice that comes out. Or your father's, with the same sigh.
You had promised yourself: never. And then you cut people off the way he did, you say "we'll see" the way she did, you tidy the kitchen sighing like the two of them. It sends a small chill down your neck. I understand that chill: catching yourself with a voice that isn't yours is no fun.
You grew up watching how people do it when they're tired, when they're scared, when they want to be listened to. Nobody taught you, it settled in you before you had a choice. So when you're at the end of your rope, the road you know best is the one that opens.
It doesn't say who you are, it says where you come from. And it costs you that second right after, when you judge yourself with their eyes. Is that how it goes for you?
It doesn't say who you are, it says where you come from.
I was wondering…
What did you promise yourself you'd never be, back when you were small and watching them?
